Volker Stevin Contracting Team’s Exemplary Response to Calgary Water Main Crisis

In the face of a local state of emergency, the Volker Stevin Contracting team proved their resilience and dedication. On June 5, 2024, a catastrophic break in a feeder main significantly impacted water availability throughout Calgary and its surrounding communities. Volker Stevin Contracting was sought out by the City of Calgary and tasked with critical repairs on two of the four affected sections, as well as the surface rehabilitation for the city road, including patching, milling, and top lifting.

The complex repair work included breaking out the existing road, excavating trenches, removing and replacing failed sections of the water pipe, and installing new coated steel pipes with necessary adaptations. We utilized City sourced pipe from San Diego and coordinated locally fabricated components, applying the latest techniques in corrosion and cathodic protection.

Our dedicated crews worked in split shifts to ensure continuous progress, minimizing downtime and expediting the repair process.

“We were incredibly proud of our Volker family for rising to the challenge during this critical time,” said Damien Festa, General Manager, Underground Deep & Shallow Utilities, Volker Stevin Contracting. “Our crews’ hard work and expertise were vital in restoring access to water and reopening city roads. Their efforts were truly commendable, and we are honored to call them our own.”

Fred Desjarlais, CEO of VolkerWessels North America, remarked, “This situation has truly highlighted the importance of community and collaboration. Our team’s unwavering dedication and professionalism have been instrumental in overcoming this crisis. We are committed to continuing our support for Calgary and ensuring the resilience of our city’s infrastructure.”

Volker Stevin would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone involved for their unwavering dedication and expertise. Your hard work has ensured that the city of Calgary remains ready for the future.
